Today is this gorgeous women’s birthday and I thought what a better way to celebrate then sharing all 50+ photos I took of her and her fiancé this past summer. I also recently received their wedding invitation in the mail and it was a gentle reminder to write all about our wonderful evening together and relive their magical engagement session on Quadra Island.
Graeme, Miranda, and I go way back. We all attended the same high school together and when I was 19 Graeme and I even vacationed in Mexico together with a group of friends. Now, the friend group as we call it spends our summers together playing baseball, camping, and celebrating anything we can so we can all be together. At those celebrations Graeme is always the life of the party. With his amazing dad jokes and contagious laugh you know you will have a great time when he is around. Miranda is the sweetest women you will ever meet. Her kindness and intelligence are just a few of the reasons I love to be around her. Her gentle soul is exactly what Graeme needed, really what we all needed.
Their story is truly one about waiting for the right person. Almost like in a book where all the friends are yelling “can you please just be together all ready”. It was easy for us outsiders to see the spark, but it took them a little while to see it for themselves. Their friendship began long before he ever proposed in Hawaii and while it look them a while to get there, we are all so happy they finally figured it out.
I was so honoured when Miranda asked me to photograph their engagement session. I simply knew we had to do it on Quadra. So many moments for Graeme, Miranda and I had all happened here and for me (maybe selfishly) it felt like the perfect place to capture wonderful memories together. I wanted something them, something meaningful, and something magical. Lucky for me I know them and that makes such a difference in my ability to decide on a location. When someone I know reaches out there is almost always a moment where I go “This is where I need to capture them”. And I think the universe shouted back to us that night, you were right!
It was the hottest day in July - 32 degrees, the beach was packed with people but if you ask any of us if we noticed the answer would be no. We shot for a long time without any bother to us what was happening. It just flowed and as a photographer you truly cannot ask for anything better. The evening wrapped itself in an orange glow only summer provides. When sun shines right at your eye line and you close your eyes to take in all the warmth and goodness that summer brings. That was this evening. A magical, summer evening, where the sun shines just right and you wonder how you got to be so lucky to experience it. We ended the evening with a few photos of a little bump that would be their’s to share when they were ready and I wondered how I got to be so lucky to be a part of moments like this.
We walked back to our vehicles and hugged goodbye. As I was driving out, catching my eye was the large orange sun sinking behind the mountains, with bright rays raining down upon the ocean, I pulled over. I waited and flagged them down to get out of the truck. I simply had to take this photo. They stood in front of me and I clicked as fast as I could as we were blocking the road. It ended up being my favourite image of the whole evening. The one where the sky shouted, you were right! This is where we were supposed to be.
Thank you G & MJ for an evening I will never forget.
with love, Shay
